Health Canada (HC), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Infrastructure Canada (INFC) are working to build employee data literacy as part of their Data Strategy. The launch of these data bootcamps will provide a path to upskilling employees by increasing data capacity, data literacy, and make greater use of data in evidence informed policy making. We recognize the diverse range of skillsets within each organization so more advanced courses will be offered to those with existing knowledge of data, with a focus on data storytelling and more advanced techniques.

The opportunity to acquire and/or reinforce important data skills using a hands-on approach while learning directly from data experts and peers. Increase and solidify your data knowledge, skill and capacity through the use of powerful data tools and software to manage, analyze, and interpret data but also effectively presenting the story of the data.

How does the bootcamp work?

These courses are free with manager approval. Courses will be offered virtually, in both official languages throughout the year. They will be open to all experience and skill levels.

Data Foundations

The first in a three-part series, this course provides students with a foundational knowledge of dealing with data. Learn how to plot and optimise graphs using good visualization principles, interpret basic descriptive statistics, understand and plot frequency distributions, use and adapt pivot tables, understand variants and measures of central tendency and understand misleading statistics and how to avoid them.

With the mantra 'learn by doing', this course teaches the fundamentals of data analysis through interactive and practical content.   • Solve problems using data by utilising the 4 step Data Analyst method

Before you dive in, make sure you've gone through the necessary prerequisites for your chosen course. This ensures you're fully prepared and can make the most of the learning experience.

2. Register for a Course

Once you've reviewed the prerequisites, proceed to register for your desired course right here on our landing page. Simply click on the coloured "Register today" button under the name of the course you would like to register for and fill out the form that opens. You can expect to receive a no-reply email with a link to the WYWM site within 2 business days.

Special Note on Pre-Requisites
If you've registered for a course that requires prerequisites and haven't completed them yet, don't worry! We'll automatically register you for the prerequisite course. Meanwhile, your name will be kept on the waitlist for the course you initially registered for.

Instructor-led Bootcamp Registration
 If you're registering for an instructor-led bootcamp, you'll receive an email confirming your seat for the session of your choice. In the rare event that the bootcamp is already full, we'll inform you promptly. You can then choose to enroll in another session at a later date.
While there is only 1.5hrs of instructor-led class time, it is important to reserve time in your schedule for the self-directed learning component.

For every day of classes, it is estimated that the self-directed learning component will take 3-4 hours. Completing these lessons and activities on the course platform is essential to your progress and mastery of course concepts.

The self-directed learning can be completed at any time after the class. It is important that you finish all the work before the next lesson.
